Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

We prescribe normal saline drops for babies to clear the nose in case of stuffed nose which poses difficulty in breathing.

For infants it is always better to get them examined by a doctor before starting on any treatment.

Self treating your babies could some times be dangerous.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Pediatrician Dr. Taher Y Kagalwala's  Response
Your pharmacist was correct in stating that there are no curative medicines for a common cold. This is because the problem is self-limiting, and is caused by a virus. You may try oral paracetamol for discomfort and feverish constitution, saline nose drops in case her nose is getting blocked, and application of Vicks VapoRub to her pillow so that the vapours help her to sleep. Vicks must NEVER be applied directly on the child as advertisements are known to show.

Antibiotics are useless. Cough mixtures are unsafe at the age of 6 months. There are herbal cough remedies available all over the world. If you are in India, and if your baby has a cough in addition to the cold, you may try Zecuf, Adulsa or Koflet for this purpose, but believe me, the cold will not respond to a cough syrup.

Best wishes,

Dr. Taher
