Have Squamous Cell Carcinoma Of The Lung. Have Mediastinal Extension On Pulmonary Artery. Heart Has Pericardial Fluid. Problem?

my husband was told he had stage iv squamous cell carcinoma of the lung in july 2011. In Jan.2012 he had went into remission but we just found out it shows an enlargememt in size from 5.0/3.0cm to 5.3/4.9cm. Im just really scared of looseing him, but can you tell me what we should expect next? There is greater mediastinal extension and surrounds the superior margin of the left main pulmonary artery. Suggest disease progression. A tiny pericardial effusion& 3 tiny nodular areas in right upper lobe are unchanged. his heart is the normal size& there is a trace amount of pericardial fluid. When we go in to see his doctor he never ask any questions& I feel like if he wanted to know things he'd ask, so I cant bring it to ask the questions.

Hello,
It is definitely a problem with stage 4 lung cancer and the fact is that it can not be cured but definitely treatable.
Whatever statistics are available regarding prognosis and future outcome of stage 4 lung cancer, they are very old. These data were gathered in 2005 when the treatment was totally different and much less advanced as compared to now.
The modern treatments have not only improved survival rate but they help in alleviating your lot of symptoms also.
Several treatments are being evaluated in clinical trials currently and it is hoped that squamous cell carcinoma f lung prognosis will improve in future.
Just carry on with the treatment and stop bothering about the survival rate.
Give him your love, affection, care and best possible treatment within your means.
Let your doctor decide the best available treatment for him.
thanks
