Have Problem In The Disk And Pain In The Hip. No Medication Till Now. Is Discectomy Required?

L5/S1 Level A disk fragment in the left paracentral and subarticular position which effaces the origin of the right S1 nerve within the lateral recess. The lesion appears contiguous with the adjacent disc margin. There is enhancement in the margins of the lesion in keeping with inflammatory change. The fragment itself measures 11mm x 9mm. The right lateral recess and canal appear normal. The L5nerve roots exit normally. There are degenerative hypertrophic changes in the facel joints. Do I need a discectomy? As have pain in left hip emanating down the left leg?

Hi!.Thanks for your query. As per your expressed reports and complaints you are having compression of the nerve. You may need the surgery for decompression to be free from pain. See a Neurosurgeon for the management ad advice. Take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
Lumbar discectomy is not needed in all cases of disc prolapse. The initial management is always conservative by the following means -
* maintain your body weight at an optimum level
* avoid bending forwards and lifting weights
* analgesics and muscle relaxants as & when necessary
* Physiotherapy of back muscles
If your symptoms are not resolving even after 4-6 months of conservative management and your radicular pains are incapacitating for you, then surgical decompression may be needed.
Hope this helps
