Have Pinworms. Taken Pyrantol, Mebendazole, Albendazole. Blood Test Shows Low Iron And Vitamin D. Any Thoughts?

Hi Dr Narasi,

I have battled with pinworms (enterobius vermicularis) for 4 years. I have followed extreme hygiene measures, and tried repeated doses of pyrantol and mebendazole. I have been on Albendazole for 2 months, but on a 2 week rest period the symptoms returned and were worse than ever. My doctor seems baffled. I have had blood tests taken and show low iron and low vitamin d. I am hoping to see a GE next. Do you have any thoughts?

Hello! Enterobius Vermicularis usually dont cause symptoms, rarely only it causes eosinophillic enteritis. Treatment is single dose of albendazole, followed by single dose after 15 days. however all the family members should be dewormed and all clothes and linen should be washed carefully. Cuase of low irona dn low vit D should be some other for you require investigations. So I advise you to visit a Gastroenterologist and take his advise. I hope this will help you
