Have Mild Tinnitus, Chronic Ocular Rosacea, Seasonal Allergies. Used Tobradex. Express Concern?

Hi, I have mild tinnitus and either chronic ocular rosacea or am suffering from seasonal allergies. My ophthalmologist put me on Tobradex drops 3X a day and Tobradex ointment at night. I am concerned that these medications will make my tinnitus worse either temporarily or permanently. He has suggested a 5 week course tapering of to 2X a day with the drops and the ointment at night after 2 weeks. Do I need to be concerned?

Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
Tobramycin is an ototoxic drug and any worsen your tinnitus. As far as ocular rosacea is concerned it is characterised by itchy eyes with gritty sensation, presence of telangiectasia in eye, lid swelling, stye, lid scaling etc. it is usually associated with cutaneous rosacea ie facial redness and thready veins will be present too. Only in 20 percent cases it any precede skin lesions. Treatment for eye rosacea is oral doxycycline , eye drops containing cyclosporine, steroids, metronidazole gel and artificial tears. Antibiotic eye drops as such are not required in rosacea as it has no infectious pathology but some doctors prefer giving antibiotic steroid eye drop. If your doctor feels that you need the same, kindly do let the doctor know about tinnitus. So that another antibiotic steroid eye drop can be prescribed
Hope that helped
