Have Ear Infection, Colorless Liquid In Ears, Flaky Skin In Ear Canal. Tried Antibiotics, Steroid Ear Drops, Not Helping

I have an ear infection which results in colourless liquid building up in my ears when I am asleep and then drying out which causes flaky skin within the ear channel. Occasionally the area around my ear (both) hardens and then is very sensitive to touch. It is very painful and i cannot touch my ear for about an hour until the pain subsides. I have tried the normal antibiotic and steroid ear drops and they do not work. Can you help (I think that it might be connected with possible problems in my throat)

Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Yes, you are right. It could be your throat problem which is giving rise to this recurrent ear infection. If I were your doctor, for the persisting symptoms even after the course of antibiotics, I would suggest you a X ray of para-nasal sinuses, and for the mastoid bone in the skull just behind the ear where infection is difficult to eradicate with the usual antibiotics. I would suggest you for a culture/sensitivity test of a throat swab, and a swab of the discharge from the ear to be sure about the antibiotic which would act on the pathogens in your case. Apart from this I would also give you some anti allergic, decongestant, and anti inflammatory drug after meals, along with a proton pump inhibitor drug. This with regular simple steam inhalations would possibly cure your condition gradually. Steroid ear drops should be used only after advice of an ENT specialist/family physician after physical examination of your ear, nose and throat. In case of no relief or increasing symptoms, you have to anyways consult a ENT specialist for further management.

Thanks for using the heatlh care magic for your health query. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
