Have Coughing. Had Chest X-ray. Pneumonia?

Hi I'm a 47 year old female who has had a cough since Oct. 17th approximately. I am still coughing. It's dry. I saw my GP last week who said she couldn't hear breath sounds on my back right and sent me for a chest x-ray. She said she'd call if I had pneumonia. I never got the call so assuming I don't but I can't get rid of this cough. My dad has pneumonia and is in hospital and I remember him coughing on me when he visited us around the time I got sick? What do you think is going on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about chronic cough. The most common cause of dry chronic cough is not pneumonia. Postnasal drip, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, drugs, smoking, etc. If it were pneumonia, signs of respiratory distress would have been at least present. I will suggest that you get evaluated by a pneumologist if your doctor isn't too sure f what the cause is and you are not feeling any better.

I don't think your dad coughing over you could be a possible reason for this. Doctors get coughed at all the times but they don't develop pneumonia as a result of this.

I hope you find this helpful. Thank you so much for using our services and feel free to request for more information if need be. I wish you the best of health.
Thanks.
