Have Belly Button Hernia. Painful And Tender To Touch. What To Do?

I've had a belly button hernia for several years without any pain or related problems, but last Friday I experienced significant pain in the belly button area and it was tender to the touch. My wife, a retired RN said it was larger then normal.
I'm a 76 year old male, fairly active, 6 foot tall and weigh 207 pounds. . My doctor is aware of the hernia but doesn't know of the recent complication. What should my plan of action be?

Hello,
Thanks for writing in.
You are an alert patient with a belly button or umbilical hernia.
I guess you have been consulting your doctor regularly for this problem.
A pain in your umbilical hernia could be due to only obstruction in the herniating contents (bowel or fat) or obstruction with infection.
You may please get a ultrasound scan of your abdomen with focus on your umbilical hernia. Then please take consultation form your surgeon as to whether a surgery is indicated for you.
Take care.
