Has diabetes controlled by insulin. Why did she vomit and have diarrhea after fish and rice?

My 67 year old mother has diabetes that she controls with insulin . Today she took her morning insulin but didn t eat until over an hour afterward. She ate broiled fish and brown rice, and within 20 minutes had vomiting & diarrhea and a swooshing sound in her head. She became very cold w chills (temperature 96-96.7 over the last 30 minutes) and her blood sugar is reading 280. What is she experiencing? Should I take her to an emergency room?

Hi There.

Sorry that I saw this query just now and almost more than a fortnight since it was posted (I am new here!). I hope your mother is out of the acute physical disturbance by now and doing fine. The cause of her condition might have been food allergy or food poisoning. High sugars do warrant care. Being on insulin does not mean her sugars will be always under control. Please make sure she undergoes thorough check up of her sugars at fasting, 2 hour post each meal and HbA1c level to get an exact idea if the insulin doses are appropriate for her or need titration to optimize the sugar control. Good luck.
