The PCR test has a window period of 2 to 3 weeks. The window period is the time of contact or infection to the time that a test would be able pick up that an infection is present.
This means that you can consider having an HIV PCR DNA
test done 2 to 3 weeks after the high risk contact.
This window period is shorter than the ELISA
test because it is looking for the virus itself and not the body's reaction to it.
