Had Umbilical Hernia Surgery. Redness Below The Umbilicus. Hematoma?

i had umbilical hernia surgery repair on tuesday May 28. Early this morning I went to void and noticed dark redness below the umbilicus 2 inches in length and 1 inch wide. No pain in the area that is unusual - only when I get up and down out of bed. No abnormal warmth in the area either. I am a little concerned and undecided if I should get this looked at. I would feel silly if it was just a hematoma that I had looked at.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Yes, hematoma is most probable. And you should know that hematoma when left untreated can cause serious complication. Hematoma is a blood collection in the soft tissues. It is quite common after a surgery. Some parts of hematoma can get absorbed without any problems. But other part of hematoma gets infected, turns into an abscess. Abscess or inflammation in the area where something was stitched will cause weakness of this stitches and you will get back your hernia.
Fluid accumulation (called seroma) is also possible. This fluid is produced by the peritoneum (a membrane which covers abdominal body from inside). If so, it is going to take weeks or even months for this fluid to stop being secreted.

I suggest you to visit your surgeon and have it checked. Needle puncture might be necessary.

Hope this will help.
Regards.

General & Family Physician Dr. Ramesh M.Vachharajani's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
It seems that there might be having some hematoma on the operated part.
Apply ice pack on the part 2-3 times a day for 2 days.
If pain or swelling is there and there is no improvement, then consult your operating doctor and get examined.
Ok and bye.
