Had Surgery Due To Accident. Have Metal Plates And Screws Inserted Into Arm. Have Pain. Suggest?

I've had surgery in multiple locations on my body from getting hit by a car. I mean the accident involved a vehicle at a high speed and me as a pedestrian. I've had metal plates and screws inserted into my arm. My question is, considering I am in severe pain in my arm, and what is your recommendation for the type of pain meds that I should be on, or what would you give your patients. I have some prescribed to me now, but I don't feel that they are working like they should be.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
There should be follow-up with the surgeon who operated so that cause of continuous pain has to be found- usually it is some hematoma(coolection of blood) or some reactionary swelling producing constriction and pain for which some release measures may all that may help along with prescribed drugs.Usually elevation of arm above body level and some exercises of joints (free one) are also helpful

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The pain after internal fixation of long bone fractures should gradually wane off and should be totally pain free after 4 weeks of surgery which is considered as normal.

If you still experience pain even after 1 month of surgery, then that is definitely abnormal and warrants investigations. So, simply using powerful analgesic preparations will only suppresses the pain but they will not treat the root cause.

So, I suggest you to consult your treating doctor and discuss the issues.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
