Had Root Canal On Upper Left Back Tooth. Have Numbness, Aching Pain. Reason?

had root canal on upper left back tooth (wisdom teeth removed years ago) 22 Feb 2013; Crack was found in tooth. Very inflammed prior to root canal. After root canal took meds for inflammation and pain and everything felt fine until meds finished and then numbness along left side of face and dull aching pain inside mouth around root canal tooth. Also had nose bleeds from left nostral only for five to six days following root canal, the blood was brownish red color and bleed when I bent forward or looked down. Went to a different endodonist where I now live and xray shows perfect root canal and nothing more. Took meds amoxicillin for 5-6 days and the symptoms lessened but are still there. The numbness is centered on left cheek now and the ache/pain inside mouth left side makes it painful to sleep on left side of face and headaches are resulting daily. What can be going on?

Helo ,

Thanks for posting your query.

Usually,if the rct has done properly, pain and swelling will not re-occur.

There is chance of peri-apical infection or perforation or ledge formation.

re-RCT can be done.
If the symptoms persists, tooth has to be extracted.
Medicines will relieve pain only temporarily.
Warm saline/betadine rinse may be helpful.

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

Pain , numbness can be due to incompletely treated tooth, reinfection of the tooth leading to spread of infection to the adjacent tissues , perforation of the canal at the time of canal preparation.

Get thourough clinical examination of the tooth .
Take an x-ray, depending upon which the treatment will be decided.
Most prabably you have to with re-RCT of the tooth or extraction.

Antibiotic and analgesic will give a temporary relief.
Use saline water gargles which will give a soothing effect .

Hope this helps out .

Regards..

hello and welcome to HCM,

Root canal procedure is done to remove the infected nerve tissue completely from the tooth and the tooth is devitalised permanently so there is no question of pain once the root canal is done successfully.

Pain and discomfort is seen if there is missed canal in the tooth left unexplored . faulty fillings , perforations along the length of root or the root apex may lead to infection in the pariapical areas.

since you complain of nasal drip and bleeding i would suggest you to get an OPG radiograpg done which shows the entire picture of both the jaws , teeth and the sinus and nasal septum .

you need to approach an oral surgeon with an OPG who swill help ypou out with exact treatment.

i hope this helps ,

take care.

hello
the numbness and bleeding from nose may have occured because of the posterior superior alveolar nerve block which would have been given for root canal and the needle would have punctured some blood vesels.NOW that the problem did not last for many days so no worries
as far as your present pain is concerned , it may be due to two things
1.your root canal tooth still is infected , for that you may go for a radiograph and have it checked
2.the 2nd most probable cause may be that the nerve block that was given may have resulted in haemotoma formation due to puncture of pterygoid plexus of vains
so what i would adivise to relieve your pain is to take following medication
1.clavum 625 mg twice daily for 5 days
2.any painkiller twice daily for 5 days
3.omancortil 10 mg twice daily
4.luke warm saline rinses followed by cold pack on the cheek from outside for 6-8 times daily
hope this helps
