Had Mirena Insert. Had No Period With Mirena. Having Brown Discharge And Smelling Really Bad. Suggestions?

I have a Mirena insert and was going to get it removed at the 5yr mark in Mar this year. When I went to my appt, the doc said he'd just been in a meeting re Mirena and they're testing the theory that the Mirena can remain in place another year with no problems. I have had little to no period/spotting with the Mirena (I got it originally to control bad bleeding). Now I am experiencing a discharge that is dark brown and smells really bad. Not a lot, but enough to require a thin pad. It being dark brown and smelly has me concerned. Suggestions?

Mirena is a hormone releasing intra uterine device. The small amount of hormone it releases every day is sufficient for 5 years only. Your symptom of brown discharge indicate that hormone release is probably not sufficient now. Bad smell indicates infection.
So, my suggestion is to remove this device. Send it for culture in a lab, to find out the causative agent of infection, get appropriate antibiotic treatment & if you wish you can have a new device insertion.
