Had Infections After Impacted Wisdom Teeth. X-ray Did Not Show Any Bone Fragments. Suggestions?

Hi, my 16 year old daughter had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed at the end of June. She has had 3 infections of the bottom teeth. Antibiotics clear the infection and then it reappears in about 2 weeks time. A post op X-ray did not show any bone fragments. We will see the surgeon again on Tuesday. Any thoughts on why this is happening and any suggestions on the questions I should be asking the surgeon?

Ps . The antibiotics have been used as prescribed and all post op instructions followed.

Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

Did the infection appeared on the site of extraction socket or is it associated with adjacent tooth/inter-dental spaces?

Since the x-ray does not show any bone fragments underlying, the cause for infection can be due to spread of infection into adjacent tissue spaces.

Pus if present, has to be drained and Curettage has to be done.

Deep caries if present, has to be root canal treated or extracted.

Periodontal pocket associated with Bone loss has to be treated with periodontal surgery.

I would suggest you to get a second opinion by dentist.

Hope this helps .

Meanwhile,maintain oral hygiene well.

Take care.

Hello and welcome.

After going through the complete history posted here,it appears that your daughter has got reinfection. The cause of infection could be many.

1.sometimes the given antibiotic is resistant to the bacteria's and thus causes reinfection. This can be cured by changing the antibiotic.

2. sometimes the usual duration for which the antibiotic is given is inadequate to clear the bacterial load.Even in this case,a repeated course is advised.

3.Another case that can be considered is patient's immune status. If the patient is anemic or unwell then the recovery is slow and there are chances of recurrences.(This is called host immune response.).Therefore she should take nutritious food and copious amount of water for speedy recovery.

In answer to your question above i would like to say that please do not be worried and discuss with your doctor.further you can do as per advised by your dentist. The probable causes i have already mentioned above.

Meanwhile please continue with the present medication and follow the given instructions, she will be fine soon.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Take care.

Welcome to HCM forum. It is very unusual that an infection of an extracted wisdom tooth socket will reappear after 2 weeks time after the process of healing. Almost impossible. it seems that a neighboring tooth is infected and it reflects that your extracted tooth socket is re-infected again. its good that you decided to visit an oral surgeon. Let him/her examine the condition and find out the real reason and treat accordingly.Wishing you a good health.

hello,

after going through your query, the following can be the possibilities-
1. reinfection of the socket
2. spread of the infection to adjacent tissues
3. deep caries or periodontal problem in the adjacent teeth.

i advice you for one of the oral surgeons opinion. let him/her examine.

thanks

take care...
