Had Hysterectomy, Laparoscopy, Incision Of Stomach To Removed Uterus And Fallopian Tubes. When Will It Heal?

I had my hysterectomy 5.5 months ago. It was laproscopy with a 3" incision on he left side of stomach to remove uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries ad clean all the debri from a huge fibroid that had died and actually fallen off the top of the uteru. It was supposedly the size of the uterus, before it was strangulated and died. The doctor cleaned and rinsed the internal area where it fell. I thought I healed really well. Went back to work at 6 weeks. But about a month after returning to work, my bowels are hard to move, and left side of abdomen is huge, with a hard bulge that gets bigger the longer I stand. I wear a band to help. Is this a hernia? My bowel move better when I press on the area. I use stool softeners now.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

The history of your surgery is confusing. According to you it was a laparoscopic hysterectomy, but the incision size is 3" which is mismatching. Laparoscopic surgery is done with at least 3-4 ports, which are nor more than 3/4" diameter or less. Possibly one of your port wound was enlarged to remove the uterus/fibroid, which can be explained only by your surgeon. It is not infrequent to enlarge the port size many times in a laparoscopy surgery in better interest of the patient.

About the bulge in the incision area, your description matches with the development of an incisional hernia at the port site. I would suggest you to get yourself examined by your surgeon to diagnose it, and for further management.

Till then, I would advise an abdominal binder for you for a good support of your abdominal musculature to lessen the discomfort of the hernia. Also please avoid any work which increases your intra abdominal pressure and causes the bulge to increase in size.

Thanks for consulting heatlcaremagic forum for your health query. Good luck.
