Had Fallen And MRI Showed Partial ACL Tear. Advised To Wear Knee Pad And Go Walking. Precautionary Measures?

Dear Doctor,
I am 66 (male) and I had a fall on 3rd August (twisting & turning at the beach) and subsequent MRI on 16th August shows partial acl tear. I have been advised to wear knee support while going out and to avoid squatting, jogging and breast stroke swimming (all of which I have been doing for years). I have been doing physio exercises for quads, hamstrings & glutes twice daily and been walking normally without support and I go for a slow 3 km walk daily without pain. Could you kindly list what activities I should totally avoid to minimise risks of complete acl tear. Is complete acl avoidable or is it only a question of time. Can I increase my walk to 5 km daily and should I avoid carrying weights - babies, carry bags in flights etc., Thanks M.Lakshmiram, Chennai, India.

Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.

I had gone through your query and understand your concern.

Excellent. You are doing a good job. Really your wok out will definitely hasten your recovery.

What you are doing now is essential.
Walking for 3 km with Acl tear is enough.
Whatever may be, Do not hyperextend your knees.
Do not carry heavy weight at least for 3 months.
But gradual increase in weight carrying is advisable.

When you do any activity that involves bending without brace, it is important to ensure that your knees are lined up with your feet to avoid injury.
You should not work out in street shoes, nor should you wear shoes that do not provide adequate support.
Have healthy diet.
Practice relaxation techniques like Meditation or yoga etc..
All the best for your sooner recovery.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Regards,
Dr.Manjeth.
