Had Discectomy And Decompression On L-3/4, Did Not Do Fusion And It Collapsed. Lost Bladder Function. Advise

Hello,
Just had a discectomy and decompression on L-3/4, the doctor who did it did not do a fusion and it collapsed on me.
I have severe saddle pain and numbness in my right leg. Now my doctor is telling me there is nothing more he can do for me and I do not know where to turn. I have also lost bladder function. I am in the process of disability and only have state insurance so this adds to my issue since a lot of doctors don't take this type of insurance.

I am worse now then before and am getting worse every day.
I live in saint Helens oregon

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
Fusion is not done routinely for a single level disc lesion ( atleast in my practice, I never do ). One should not get worsening pain after disc surgery though some amount of numbness is commonly encountered after discectomy and is usually transient.
Loss of bladder function after surgery definetely indicates some serious problem in the spine and needs evaluation. I suggest you to have an MRI scan of your Lumbosacral spine to get a proper diagnosis. Hope this helps
