Had A MRI, Showed A Foot Abscess. Had A Bunionectomy And Ankle Stabilization. Developed A Swollen Foot. Now Showing Abscess. Suggestions?

I had a MRI today which showed a foot abscess. I had a bunionectomy and ankle stabilization March27th. June 12th I had a second surgery to remove hardware due to the fact that it was too large for my foot. June 27 I developed a red swollen foot. I had to go on IV antibiotics July3 and have had to stay on them to keep my symptoms under control.Today I had a MRI that showed a abscess and some kind of surgical clip that was not supposed to be there. Where do I go from here?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Red and swollen foot in the immediate post operative period suggests INFECTION unless proved otherwise. This could be the reason for keeping IV antibiotics to you.

This infection can be possibly attributed to a retained implant (surgical clip as per your description) inside the foot.

Generally, infections will not settle down untill the foreign material (in your case, some clip) is removed from the body.

Consult your treating doctor and follow his advice.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Hi, it appears to be the slip during the surgery, you better talk to your doctor with the report, for correction, Being the foreign body it will create the abscess, and unless it is removed and treated for infection it wont be cured completely.
If your doctor denies to do the repair, consult another orthopedic surgeon for correction, and get it done. Thank you.
