Had Rectocele Repair Done. Constipated. On Stool Softener And Lactulose. Recommendations?

Hi, I've had a rectocele repair 7 days ago and am still very constipated, can't go unless it's very thin. Am on stool softener and lactulose. I also take flaxmeal and slippery elm food. I believe that having had lifelong constipation is what caused the condition in the first place. I just don't want to get the same problem again and end up none the better. I'd be very grateful if you give me some advice. I haven't rung my surgeons office yet because I wanted to give this a few days time to resolve itself. Many thanks, Liz

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

The main reasons of constipation are: bad diet (low fiber intake, low mineral water intake), chronic bacterial infection, thyroid diseases, low physical activity, medicines (Ca-blockers, antidepressants), large intestine diseases (colon cancer, inflammatory bowels diseases). Before the surgery, all this possible reasons has been ruled out. If not, it should be done, otherwise your rectocele problem will return.
To help with current constipation, stool softener, lactulose, mineral water intake, Metoclopramide, hot bath (relaxes intestines muscles), physical activity (swimming or jogging) and abdomen massage (lower left abdomen is were sigmoid colon is and try to push gently the stool from that place down) should help.
If there will be no stool for few more days, you should visit your doctor.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
