My concerns are with my HDL being only 35. I have read that a low HDL (such as mine) below 40 increases my risk of heart attack and/or stroke by 50%. My LDL of 57 appears okay because I was told my LDL should be below 70 because of my past cardiac history. It seems I am in a loose-loose situation.

MY CONCERN HAS TO DO WITH MY HDL OF 35. I HAVE READ THAT AN HDL BELOW 40 PUTS ME AT RISK FOR HEART ATTACK AND/OR STROKE BY 50%. MY LDL APPEARS TO BE GOOD BECAUSE IT IS 57. I WAS TOLD MY LDL SHOULD BE BELOW 70 BECAUSE OF MY PAST (WIDOW MAKER AND TWO STINTS INSERTED IN 2004 AND A HEART ATTACK AND ONE STINT INSERTED IN 2006). I DO NOT SMOKE OR DRINK SO MY RISK FACTORS ARE REDUCED FOR THOSE REASONS.
ALSO, WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS TO HELP INCREASE MY HDL?

Hello There..
Ur Hdl level can be incaresed by various methods.
1)Exercise-Many people don't like to hear it, but regular aerobic exercise (any exercise, such as walking, jogging or bike riding, that raises your heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes at a time) may be the most effective way to increase HDL levels. Recent evidence suggests that the duration of exercise, rather than the intensity, is the more important factor in raising HDL choleserol. But any aerobic exercise helps.
2)Lose weight. Obesity results not only in increased LDL cholesterol, but also in reduced HDL cholesterol. If you are overweight, reducing your weight should increase your HDL levels.
3)Since u dont smoke and drink, its one of the best ways to increase ur HDL level..
4)Diet:
Increase the monounsaturated fats in your diet. Monounsaturated fats such as canola oil, avocado oil, or olive oil and in the fats found in peanut butter can increase HDL cholesterol levels without increasing the total cholesterol.
Decrease the amount of transfatty acid food consumption.
Add soluble fibers such as legumes, oats , vegetables to ur diet.
Other methods by which HDL level can be increased are by consuming Fish and other foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids.

Hope this helps!!
