Gangrene On Toe, Gets UTI. Doctors Advised To Begin Hospice. Is The Gangrene Going To Spread And Cause Death?

My grandma is 97 years old and we found out she has gangrene on her toe. We were told our only option was to fight aggressively or just keep her comfortable and begin hospice. We chose hospice as she doesn't really have a quality of life and she is in too much pain and gets a lot of UTIs. Is the gangrene going to spread and then cause her to die?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
As you stated that there is excruciating pain in the toe ( most probably great toe).
Age is 97 years ,but the cause of concern is GANGRENE & excruciating pain.
If I were treating physician for this pain ( excruciating ) I would come up with this measure .
Get its surgery at once before gangrene spread above.
Under local anesthesia she can get surgery , hardly it will take 20 minute.
Patient will get relief at once.
So consult a surgeon and get its surgery (2nd opinion).
Good luck. Dr. HET
