GERD, Discomfort In Abdomen, Dizziness, Cold Sweats, Inflammation Of Esophagus. Taking Nexium, Prevacid, Zantac. Sufficient?

For the past 6 months I have had what believed to be GERD symptoms: the feeling of stomach contents coming back up, occasional burning in my stomach, bitter taste in the mouth, and worsening symptoms on an empty stomach. I was put on nexium, prevacid, zantac, prilosec and am now on Protonix 40 mg qd, which works about 3 days out of 7, if I'm lucky. Eating (no matter what it is) takes my symptoms away temporarily. I also notice if am active I have less symptoms than when I am sedintary. I have had 2 "attacks" of extreme queasiness with dizziness and cold sweats but no vomiting. My gall bladder sono showed a few cholesterol stones and sludge. My EGD showed inflammation of the esophagus and stomach. My lower esophagus was irritated and they removed a polyp from my stomach (no results yet). H. Pylori blood test was negative (was hoping that was the culprit). So now I am being pressured to have my gallbladder out but I am not convinced that is my problem but I need some relief! I am sick of feeling like crap most days and not knowing what is causing it or if any medication is ever going to give me relief. Any suggestions?

Gastroenterologist 's  Response
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM).

For better control of GERD symptoms:
1.Avoid fatty meals
2. Don’t lie down soon after meals for at least half hour
3.Take small and frequent meals, instead of full meals at a time
4. wear loose clothes
5. If you are overweight or obese do weight reduction with dieting and exercise
6. take a proton pump inhibitor like protonix in morning and H2 receptor antagonist at night after 30 minutes of taking dinner like ranitidine. Also take a prokinetic agent like domperidone

GB sludge and cholesterol stones doesn't appear to cause these symptoms as it causes either severe pain *(billiary colic) and persistent severe pain (Cholecystitis). You are lucky that they are cholesterol stones which can be treated with ursodeoxycholic acid

I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. If you have any further query I will be happy to answer that too. Remain in touch and get-well soon.
