Fractured wrist. Had the cast removed. Can I participate in competitive races?

Hi I am a seventeen year old triathlete and yesterday I fractured my wrist falling off my bike. I have to wear a cast now for four weeks which as you can imagine for me is really frustrating as I can t do as much training as I normally would. The doctors gave me a waterproof cast so I can still do my swim training and they said I can cycle on a stationary bike. What I am really worried about though is if I am going to lose lots of fitness in the month I am in a cast as I can t do as much training and when I have the cast removed will it take me ages to gain the strength back in my arm as I have a qualifying race for worlds two weeks after I am supposed to get the cast removed and then nationals a month after. Will I be ok to race these? I have worked hard to get to where I am with my fitness at the moment and I really don t want to lose it.

hello and welcome to HCM
i am really sorry for your accident. you should follow your doctor's advise. bones in young age (as in your case) heal really fast. it will take you at least 4-6 weeks to fully heal. you can then gradually and steadily move from minor to major exercises. will you be completely fit in 6 weeks to participate depends upon the extent of your injury. there is no way to know for sure that will u be able to participate only time will tell. the main thing is not to over exert and do not loose hope
hope this helps

Psychiatrist Dr. Jonas Sundarakumar's  Response
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

I am sorry to hear that the wrist fracture has caused you a major hindrance to your training and competitions. Now, the time taken for you to recover will depend on the nature and severity of the fracture, for example, whether you have had a simple or a compound fracture, single or both bones fracture, etc. You may be asked to keep the cast for a minimum period of 4 to 6 weeks depending on the nature of the injury.

I would suggest that you give as much rest as possible to the affected wrist because inadequate rest and immobiliztion can result in poor healing and can cause further complications like mal-union, etc. Though I do understand how important the competitive races are to you and it is very unfortunate that you have had this wrist fracture, yet you have to understand that only if you give proper and adequate rest, will the fracture heal quickly. Even after the cast is removed, you will have to bear weight on the affected hand only gradually.

Wish you all the best.
