Fracture On Foot. Advised For A Boot. Swelling And Pain. Remedy?

Hi! I obtained a fracture on my foot about a month ago. My doctor put me in a boot and asked that I wear it for about six weeks. I have almost no pain and can move all my toes now. However, I still have some swelling and I get a tingling sensation when I touch the area of the fracuture. What does this mean? I am afraid I will have to have surgery. Also, once I am taken off the boot, how long before I can resume my normal activities. I dance, run, bike, etc.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Some amount of swelling may be seen at the level of the fracture which can be a part of the ongoing healing process and can be considered as normal.

Tingling sensation could be due to the pressure exerted by the growing new bone (callus) on the digital nerves.

Once the boot is taken off, you should start physiotherapy of the ankle so as to stretch and strengthen the surrounding soft tissues like ligaments, capsule & muscles. This may take anyway around 1-2 weeks before you can resume vigorous sporting events.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
