Feeling Tired All The Time, Heart Burn, Bloating, Pain In The Stomach. Tried Gaviscon. Family History Of Cancer

Morning, i have noticed a change in how i feel over last month or so. I am permanently tired and have no energy. When I eat I am getting occasional heartburn but mostly feel really bloated and a dull pain in my stomach its really uncomfortable. Have tried gaviscon but nothing helps. I am worried as bowel and stomach cancer run in my family. I am a 46yr old male, 5 10 with a 32 waist .

Gastroenterologist 's  Response
Hello lesleyarkinson,
Feeling of tiredness and lack of energy may indicate that your blood count
is low. This may be due to slow blood loss from the digestive tract. Since you
do mention stomach problems and heartburn symptoms , the two could be
related. I would recommend that you first have blood tests including complete
blood count, iron levels and also have your stool tested for hidden blood.
If you have not had an X-ray of the esophagus and stomach, you should
get that. (Upper GI series). After that ,depending on results you may need
an endoscoppic examination of your stomach with a biopsy.
Temporarily for relief, instead of gaviscon, try over the counter Omeprazole
20 mg. twice a day an hour before meals.
Wish you well.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Enrique Molina's  Response
I would definitely go ahead and get checked out by a gastroenterologist to get and upper endoscopy, particularly because of your family history (if you have a first degree relative, such as parent, brother/sister with cancer, that is even more important). Besides excluding gastric cancer, they can check you for Helicobacter pylori bacteria which usually lies in the stomach and can cause those symptoms and predispose you to stomach cancer, and they can test you for Celiac sprue (with small bowel biopsies) which can cause bloating. Hope that helps.
