Feeling Smell Of Burnt Rubber/plastic, Others Don't Smell. On Nortriptyline. Can It Cause Any Such Sensation?

Hi there I have had the sensation of smelling burnt rubber/plastic for the past couple of weeks, but others around me don't smell it. I desperately try to smell the floor, walls, my cloths etc to find where it is coming from. I am on nortriptyline..could this be causing it..and I am stressed due to exams coming up. The periods that it occurs are getting longer and closer together? what could it be from?

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

From the available information, you seem to be suffering from a condition called Parosmia or Phantosmia which are characterized by perception of an abnormal odor while there is no odorant in the environment. In fact, Phantosmia is also known as olfactory hallucination, which is usually associated with a type of epilepsy, called Temporal Lobe epilepsy. There is usually no loss of consciousness in this type of epilepsy.

Other causes can be

- head injury;
- upper respiratory infections, allergic rhinitis or chronic rhinitis.
- Schizophrenia

I cannot comment on the exact cause as the information provided by you is inadequate. I suggest that you switch over from nrotriptyline to Venlafaxime which is not only equally effective, but is also known to be effective in Phantosmia

Consult your doctor and discuss my opinion with him. He will order necessary tests and- based on the tests' reports- reach to the exact cause and start treatment accordingly.

Hope you find my response helpful and informative.
