Feeling Pain In Lung. Was Smoking Heavily. Lung Cancer?

I've been feeling a small pain on the right side of my lung for some time now. It seems that it may have been increasing (just a small amount). I plan on setting an appointment next week to get it checked-out. I'm 30 years of age and even though I have been smoke-free for the last three months, prior to that I was smoking heavily since I was 20. My question is, if it's not lung cancer then what else can it be?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Chest pain can be caused by any of the structures in the chest from the skin inwards.
Pain can originate from the(1) skin-herpes zoster
(2) bones- ribs and sternum
(3) muscles and other soft tissue
(4)lining of the lungs or the lungs themselves
(5)heart

Pain that is coming from the lung or its lining would involve shortness of breath as an additional symptom in most cases.
In terms of the lining of the lung, there is a condition called pleuritis which is inflammation of the pleura (lining of the lung). This can cause pain on the side involved which is worse on taking a breath.

If the pain is affected by movement in any particular direction it is possible that it may be related to the muscles or ribs.

Your visit to your doctor next week should be able to determine the cause of the pain.

I hope this helps
