Febrile Convulsion For The Child. Taking Epilex Syrup And Adobe Tablets. EEG, Hemeoegram And Whole Abdomen Test Done. Suggestion?

MY son is 4.5 years old and had an history of Febrile convulsion (Had Siezure attack twice in last 3 yrs when he had fever) . Also he is underweight (just 13 kgs ) and mainly missing his health mile stones. Recently we consulted a Doctor and he recommended EEG, Hemeoegram and Whole Abdomen Test (USG) . I did that and these were the Observations of EEG
* Awake EEG record done, using 10-20 international system of electrode placement.

* Hyperventilation and Photic stimulation used as provocative procedures.

* Background activity consists of 8-9 Hz, 20-100 microvolt alpha activity which is sinusoidal, responsive to eye opening with occipital dominance bilateral symmetrical and synchronous.

* There are bursts of generalized slow wave discharges seen.

Photic stimulation and Hyperventilation do not contribute any further.

IMPRESSION: Abnormal Awake E.E.G Record Suggestive Of Generalized Epileptic Disorder.

So Doctor Prescribed him Epilex Syrup and Adobe 5 mg Tab on Daily Basis .
My concern is if we are going on the right Path or not and are the medicines safe for my kid

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Do you have any seizure history in family?

What about his birth history?

What about his developmental mile stones?

It seem he is delayed in developmental milestones as per your complaints.

If it is a just simple febrile seizures without any abnormality on EEG and without any clinical risk factors, continuous medication for fits is not required.

But in complex febrile seizure, with risk factors such as developmental delay, positive family history, EEG abnormality, child may require fits drugs on a long term basis.

EEG is showing abnormality with generalized epileptic disorder.

So you are on the right path and you need to continue the medication as per the doctor advise.

If you want, you can go for a second opinion with a pediatric neurologist regarding the advise.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Is your child having seizures only with fever or is he having seizures without fever also?

What are his current mile stones?

Does he go to the school?

Can he run around and climb stairs?

Can he draw a triangle or square on a paper?

Continue to ask further queries.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
