Ear Infection, Tube Placed Inside Ear Drum, No Relief. Long Term Damage To Ear?

Hello, I am a 35 year old adult who get ear infections all the time, currently have one now in my bad ear that has lasted two weeks even with treatment. every years I get a tube placed in my ear yet still get major infections, my concern is after so many tube placements i m on my third as an adult and had many as a child on the same ear drum.. whats them long term damage that can be caused by so many and scaring. I dont think the tubes are really helping and I m thinking there must be other options.

Hi and thanks for the query,
Repeated placement of tubes can lead to scarring and perforations of the ear drum.
There is a tube called the eustachian tube that connects the nose to the ear. Improper functioning of the tube can lead to recurrent infections of the ear.
Sorry to say but there is no treatment for correction of a faulty eustachian tube.
Surgeries have been described for correction of eustachian tubes. But their results have not been very good.
Allergies of the nose also lead to malfunctioning of the tube. If you have allergic symptoms please seek treatment for the same.
You can follow some general measures for improving the patency of the tube.
1) Regular steam inhalation 5 times daily unclogs the tubes.
2) Blow a balloon in the morning and again in the evening.
3) Do not let water to enter the ears..
Hope it has been helpful,
Regards, Dr Kishori.
