Done Cataract Surgery. Have Glaucoma. Done Laser Treatment. Cause?

Dear Doctor K.
I am a seventy-four year old lady who recently had cataract surgery in both eyes a year ago. Before the surgery I have never had any eye trouble whatsoever and several of my friends have undergone the same surgery with no problems at all. I developed glaucoma in my left eye, took eye drops for several months, they did't work, then had a lazier treatment of which didn't work either. I am wondering what caused the glaucoma, read it could have been the cataract surgery but would like to have your opinion about this. Also my eye Doctor is an experienced eye surgeon and is on the list as one of the best in Iowa.
Thanks.

Hi there. An uncomplicated cataract surgery generally does not lead to glaucoma. It has been known to occur if there is a complication like vitreous loss but it does not seem to be case with you. The raised pressure in your eye could have been present prior to surgery but was not detected. There are 2 types of glaucoma and tests are needed to decide which it is. In some patients the glaucoma is not related to the surgery at all and has developed coincidentally later.
