Does The Low Blood Pressure Reading Needing ER Admission?

I m a 72 year old male. I take 50 mgs of Atenolol twice a day for high blood pressure. The other regular medications I take, are: 100 mg Pletal x1; 10 mg. Norvasc x1; 20 mg. Zocor x1; 10 mg. Glucotrol XL x1; and 500 mg. Glucophage XR x5. Being treated right now for shingles and taking 25 mg. Elavil x1, and 325 mg. Norcor x2 4 x a day. Since taking a 10 day dose of Prednisone for the shingles, along with the Elavil and Norcor, my blood pressure readings have been low. The HIGHEST reading I have had in two days is 109/48, pulse of 71, and that reading was taken while smoking a cigarette. My wife thinks I need to go to the ER, I think I am fine. I am not dizzy, but my wife says I keep dozing off. Is that reading too low?

Welcome to healthcaremagic,
109/48 is low blood pressure. You need to reduce the dose of atenolol, visit your physician who can check your blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer and make the necessary changes in the dosage.
Smoking is very injurious and it will accelerate atherosclerosis (fat in your blood vessels) which will increase your blood pressure. So I advise you to consider quitting your habit of smoking.
Hope that answers you question.
