Does The A1C Level Of 6.4 Mean Diabetic?

I have recently have lab work done in February. My question is will I be a candidate for Diabetes? Here is my info from my blood work. My A1C is 6.4 My Glucose level was 116, I weigh 206, 50 years old and have a brother with Type 2 Diabetes. I was told by my doctor that on my next visit in May that I will be on medication. My Glucose meter comes out 106-119 am and 110-145 pm reading daily. I found out that eating 2 bananas and about 2/3 cup daily of raisins does not help! Can you give an answer or a website to learn more about this. Thank You for your help.

Diabetologist 's  Response
hi there
i can understand your concern
in my opinion you might be in the stage of pre diabetes.
i would like to share some information regarding diagnosis of diabetes.
he diagnosis of diabetes requires one of the following:

• A fasting glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL;

• A hemoglobin A1c level ≥ 6.5%;

• A random glucose level > 200 mg/dL in a markedly symptomatic patient(symptoms like increased urination,thirst,weight loss,blurred vision and non healing ulcers.

your Hba1c% report is 6.4 so you are in a stage of pre diabetes.

The main reason for your pre-diabetes might be your weight
which will increase insulin resistance and increase the insulin demand in body.
now you need to concentrate more on weight reduction .try to achieve a healthy BMI that is 25.

the good news is this pre diabetes is reversible with weight loss.

Bananas are high glycemic index food and make your sugar to increase
its better to have fruits like orange and apple in a limited quantity.
you can find necessary information about diabetes in www.ada.org.
regards
