Does Taking Stress While Having High Bp Cause Stroke?
Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here... I am a 60 year old woman. blood pressure runs in family (mother) I was diagnosed with HBP 20 years ago by a cardiologist and was on meds for ten year. Because of cough family dr. discontinued . Was not put back on meds. I have had a steady BP which fluctuate from 150/87 lower or higher. Family doctor seems to feels it is caused by stress. However, if I am not able to deal with stress am I at risk for a stroke. it was suggested I be put on an antianxity medication Citalopram to better cope with the stress and menopause. Should I be worried.
High blood pressure is a main risk factor for stroke or other type of blood vessel disease like heart attack and it should be treated. Anxiety can influence high blood pressure and if you have chronic anxiety problems Citalopram can be used to treat it. But if your high blood pressure remains over the normal limits even if anxiety is addressed then you should get treatment for it. Since you say it's constantly higher then 150/80, I suspect that anxiety is not the only factor and other treatment will be needed eventually. It's true that some drugs cause cough, mainly the ACE inhibitors class, but there are several other classes to choose alternatives from, so you have other options.
I hope to have been of help.
