Does Taking Nexium For Long Period Has Side Effects?

My husband has been taking nexium for 4 years I know maybe 5 or 6. I can't remember when he started on them. Should he be taking them that long? He's 67, has had by-pass surgery and is on beta-blockers and blood pressure meds also. Plus 2 cholesterol drugs.

Hello! Esomeprazole belongs to proton pump inhibitor drugs. If it is used for a long term (over 1 year) it is associated with a higher risk of developing chronic renal disease and dementia. Esomprazole used for a long time is also known for it's increased incidence of diarrhea from Clostridium difficile. Osteoporosis and osteoporosis related fractures may happen in high doses prolonged therapy. Hypomagnesemia can occur, and comlications related to it like arrythmias, tetany and seizures. Long therm use is associated also with gastric atrophy low vitamin B12 levels.
You mentioned above that your husband underwent a by-pass surgery. If he takes clopidogrel, esomeprazole may decrease its levels.
I hope i have been of help.
