Does Stomach Bloating And Abdominal Pain Indicate Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
Hello.im a 37 year old female and my stomach is bloated. On the bottom right side, above my torso, below my navel, im having sharp pains. My stool is soft and brown but my side hurts.it also feels like the discomfort is below my rib cage. Is this irritable bowl syndrome?
Hi, Thanks for posting your query. I am Dr.R.K. and I am pleased to assist you.
In irritable bowel syndrome, there would be abdominal pain along with either change in frequency of bowel movements or consistency of stools and bowel movements would relieve the abdominal pain or discomfort. The symptoms should be for at least 6 months before it can be called IBS.
The pain below the rib cage could be due to acid peptic disease. Prilosec may provide relief if it is acid peptic disease.
I hope that answers your question. Regards, Dr.R.K

Does Stomach Bloating And Abdominal Pain Indicate Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic Irritable bowel syndrome is a diagnosis of exclusion. This means that other medical illnesses are excluded first before it is considered. There are criteria for the diagnosis of IBS. Tests may be done if there are any alarm signs or symptoms such as weight loss, iron deficiency anemia or a family history of GI illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer. There are other causes of bloating and abdominal pain such as food intolerance, GERD, infection, inflammatory bowel disease. If your symptoms continue , you may want to visit your doctor for an assessment. I hope this helps
