Does Smoking Cigarettes Affect Digestion, Absorption Of Nutrients And Its Effectiveness?

Does smoking cigarettes affect the digestive system? Not in the commonly known laxative way, but does it interfere with digesting food, absorbing nutrients and the effectivness of the digestive system? I have been trying to work out if I have a food intolerance, but now I think its smoking. I smoked 10 cigarettes a day for 15 years, but over the last few months Ive cut down to just 10 on the weekend, and my digestive system has gone to pot. My diet hasn't really changed.

Hi,

Noted the history of smoking 10 cigarettes a day for 15 years, cut down to 10 on weekend, and the digestion system has gone to pot in spite of no changes in diet. Wants to know how smoking affects digestive system, absorbing nutrients, and so on. Since cigarette contains Nicotine and the main basic constituent and also many more these do affect the digestive tract as a whole.

It can increase the acidity, motility so that some people use it as an initiator of making pressure and passing of bowel movement. They can not pass BM without Nicotine.Since it increase the acidity, motility and many neuro-humoral changes it is difficult to say how much it affect any part of the digestive system and thus the effects are different for all others and every one who smokes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
