Hi -thank you for coming to HCM. First question, yes, smoking can negatively affect your cholesterol and definitely your heart. Weight gain, also, is linked with an increase in cholesterol. I would, through dietary and lifestyle changes, aim for a total cholesterol below 180. A thyroid value of 4.2 is high according to the 2012 guidelines put out by the Endocrinology Society on Thyroid Function. It is better to aim for 2.5. Cholesterol is not keeping your weight on, a sluggish thyroid possibly. Then, I would take a look at a diet called the Total Lifestyle Change, or TLC. Avoid trans fats, lower saturated fats, cut your portions in half to lose weight and increase your water soluble fiber. The other recommendation is to get 150 minutes of exercise in and breathe deeply since fat is metabolized through your CO2 or lungs. My best to you and have a healthy day!
