Does My Child's CBC Blood Report Indicate Neutropenia?

Hello, My son is 5 months old. Since he was 6 weeks old he has had 6 CBC blood tests. In all of them his neutrophils are around 14% and lymphocytes around 77%. Does it mean that he has neutropenia. We temporarily live in Indonesia and medical care here is not that good. Thank you!

Dear patient.
Greetings from health care magic!!! I am Dr Thakker and shall be answering your question.

As a concerned mother I very well understand your concerns for your sons ill health. I will try my best to guide you through the problem

The wbc count at 5 months of age is usually 15,000 to 20,000 per mm3. Of these 50 to 70% are neutrophils. However your son has only 15% neutrophils. I need to know the exact wbc count, haemoglobin level and the platelet count and the absolute neutrophil count.

By definition, neutropenia is defined by an absolute neutrophil count of less than 500 per mm3. I am unable to calculate this because I don't know his total wbc count.

The possible causes of neutropenia at 5 months are:

1) Congenital neutropenia

2) Diamond blackfan syndrome

3) Drug induced neutropenia

4) Infections causing lymphocytosis.

He may need a bone marrow biopsy to clinch the exact diagnosis.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker.
