Does Metoprolol Effect On Heart Palpitations Last Throughout The Night?

Hi,
I am taking 25 mg metoprolol xl twice a day. It is working for me, but because the cost of taking 50 mg once a day is lower then my doctor agree to do that change. Although I had heart palpitations even during sleeping. So my question is: Is the metoprolol xl 50mg once a day has effect lasting long enough to get me through the night (24h) between the doses?

Hi,

Yes, the XL preparations of metoprolol are meant to provide consistent plasma levels over 24 hours and need to be given only once a day. So you can take your 50 mg XL tablet just once a day instead of taking 25 mg (either XL or immediate release) tablets twice daily. If you are still worried that the dose may not last through the night, you can shift the time of the dose towards the afternoon or later.
