Does Intake Of Penicillin Cause Stomach Ache With Severe Diarrhea?

I was prescribed penicillin 500 mg 3 times daily for my ear infection. I started taking it yesterday, today I took one only and by 5 pm I had terrible stomach ache severe diarrhoea, terrible back pain, and a fever as well as nausea. Is this an allergic reaction the penicillin? I feel so ill still now, and have taken 600 mg ibuprofen as well.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns. You took some penicillin for an ear infection and today you are getting diarrhea and cramping. This is not an allergic reaction but a reaction by the antibiotic killing off the good bacteria in you colon and causing an overgrowth of bad bacteria. I would recommend stopping your antibiotic and calling your provider for another antibiotic. You can also help the diarrhea by using a probiotic.
