Does Hypothyroidism With Multinodular Goiter Cause Dysphagia?

Hi, I just found out I have hypothyroidism with a multinodular goiter. I've been having difficulty swallowing (choking on liquids) for a while now so they are doing a CT scan of my neck today to see if it has anything to do with the goiter. I'm 25 years old and the goiter is not large enough to notice when you look at my neck...could it still be the cause of my dysphagia?

Hi,

Yes, goiter may be a cause of dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing) even if it is not large enough to notice. In some cases the goiter is enlarged under the sternum (the chest wall) and is not visible but compresses the breathing and swallowing organs. So the CT scan will give more information regarding to the thyroid structure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best wishes,
Dr. Mirjeta
