Does History Of Having Perthes’ Disease Cause Difficulty In Childbirth?

I had perthes disease of the hip at age 4. I wore a brace for a year and my hip healed extremely well besides being only slightly deformed. In 25 years I never had any issues with the hip. Should I be able to have a normal childbirth or are there risks and would I need a cesarean?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Deformities of the hip should not come in way of child birth. In case the pelvis has retained some deformity, then there could be problems related to pregnancy and child birth.
Kindly get x-ray and CT scan of pelvis done and take an orthopedic opinion to make sure that there are no bony deformities of pelvis. That should ensure that you could have normal delivary or not.
Also, there might be other indications for c-section, which could be decided later as to how your pregnancy progresses.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
