Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My doctor called and said my cholesterol was over three hundred and the triglycerides were high too. I have had irritable bowel with often seven days between bowel movements. Yesterday when I had the blood test it had been six days of no bowel movement. Could this be the cause of increased cholesterol? The irritable has been since I was in my twenties...I am now 64. She wants to add a new drug besides the trilipix I am on now. I am not sure she know how bad the irritable bowel is. Thank you for this query line. Lee

The IBS = irritable bowel syndrome is not a cause of your high cholesterol and triglycerides, which is called hyperlipidemia. Hyperlipidemia is a so called "metabolic" condition, which means that various enzymes and organs in your body do not process lipids in an effective way and this shows as a high cholesterol and triglyceride level in the blood. Some people have good lipid enzymes/metabolism and some don't. The dietary cholesterol - what we eat plays only a minor role in contributing to the condition of hyperlipidemia.
IBS is a condition which affects the function of the bowel - does not contribute to the metabolic condition of hyperlipidemia.
Wishing you best of health.
