Does Head Injury Cause Subdural Hemitoma?

Hi I am a 48 year old female. I fell 2 months ago at work. I ve recovered with the help of my doctor and frequent physiotherapy for the aches a pains especially in my neck. Since last week, I am feeling periods of dizziness, weakness, and feeling like I m not balanced. I ended up in the hospital a week ago. CT for my brain, urine test, blood work, X-rays of my chest area and an Echocardiogram all showed no problems...was sent home. Now I am waiting for more heart tests and a visit to the cardiologist at the end of the month. Could I possibly have subdural hemitoma from the head injury from the fall; I had 3 stitches on the side of my head? Would it help to see a chiropractor in the future? Is all this normal?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that your CT head report was normal. Your symptoms of dizziness, weakness, imbalance could be due to

: heart problem - It could occur due to poor circulation to brain due to poor functioning heart. Other symptoms of heart disease are breathlessness on exertion, chest pain left side, breathlessness increases on lying down for prolonged period.

If you have such symptoms, the cause could be heart disease. For management, you need to consult Cardiologist. He/she will advise few specific tests to find out the cause and management will be decided accordingly.

: Brain pathology - Above mentioned symptoms can occur due to carotid artery disease leading to poor oxygenation and blood supply of brain or auditory nerve damage. Carotid artery disease may manifest as sudden periodic visual blurring, weakness of limbs, loss of consciousness. Auditory or hearing nerve damage can cause balance difficulties, vertigo or dizziness along with hearing loss.

For evaluation, you have to consult Neurologist. Auditory nerve damage could be evaluated by MRI brain and Carotid artery by Doppler of neck. Further management will be decided after final diagnosis.

: Ear pathology - Inner ear disease can cause above symptoms. Other symptoms like ear pain, hearing loss, ear discharge are usually found along with it.

Evaluation needs Ear specialist opinion.

You can correlate your symptoms and consult accordingly. Answering your question of possibility of subdural hematoma, chronic subdural hematoma can give rise to such symptoms but usually cause severe headache. In your case, it is less likely as your age is below 60 years, your CT head is normal, no headache.

You can consult chiropractor for your neck pain and physiotherapy exercises.

Hope it will help you. Take care. Thanks.

head injury can cause subdural hematoma if the injury is very severe .
after the head injury ,if a person have the complaints of headache, vomiting ,loss of consciousness ,post traumatic amnessia ,ENT bleed ,then it is ideal to rule out intracranial haemorrhage ..
