Does Having Non Penetrative Sex With A HIV Positive Person Cause Infection?

Hi I am a gay man, 54 years old. My former partner has bee HIV positive for at least 14 years. He takes the anti viral forms of medication and has told me that his HIV (viral load) is virtually undetectable and therefore having oral sex was not really a risk for me. So far I have tested negative for HIV. Is this correct that I was not at risk, per se, in having oral sex? Thank you.

Yes, non penetrative sex can cause infection but the chances are less when compared to penetrative sex. Let me explain you how the transfer occurs. HIV virus is found in body fluids like semen, precum. It enters into the non-deceased body through minor cuts or abrasions which might not be seen to the naked eye.
It is relatively difficult for the virus to survive in mouth and the gastrointestinal tract to survive and cause infection. But the chances are still there and increases with any trauma or recent dental procedures. Undetectable viral load decreases the risk of transmission but it does not eliminate the risk completely.
You can discuss the above points with your care giver or local health professional involved in HIV care and decide upon the next measure as per your locality guidelines. Hope the above information helps you. Thank you for writing into healthcaremagic. Have a great day.
