Does Hashimoto S Trigger Melasma?

I am 42, and have been diagnosed with Hoshimotos Disease. I am 5 5 and have always weighed between 105-120 lbs (even 9 mos. pregnant, I only weighed 124). About 18 mos. ago, I had a hysterectomy. 9 weeks later, I had emergency surgery for prolapse (intestines & bladder were falling out due to cuff probs). After that surgery, I was stuck at home recovering for over 12 wks. The remainder of the year, I was hospitalized 2 more times due to intestinal probs. I ve had virtually every test out there, & they ve concluded I have very slow mobility - no meds have helped, etc. My husband heard of hoshimotos disease on Dr. Oz & told me it fit me PERFECTLY & I needed to see if they ve run the blood test for it (I see a Digestive Disease Specialist also). Come to find out, they hadn t, & after a lengthy meltdown in the Drs office & the NP handing me a box of tissues talking me off the ledge from all the life changes I ve had since this stupid hysterectomy that s destroyed my body, I had blood tests done & rcvd confirmation of Hoshimotos. I need to mention that I now weigh 159 lbs - yes, that s correct, I ve always had more of a problem being too thin, NEVER EVER this problem. I just rcvd diagnosis, so I m not yet on any meds for thyroid (THS levels or whatever they re called are normal, it s only antibody levels that are elevated). Oh, and I also have SEVERE melasma - I use Obagi skin care line, & have had every treatment known to mankind (except fraxel) - to NO avail. What is my next step? What do I do to get my weight in line QUICKLY (Depression has consumed me since the 2nd surgery, I work 12-14 hrs a day easily, so all I do is sleep all weekend to reboot for coming wk). I ve always been incredibly healthy, happy, & yes, pretty. I am NONE of those now. While it sounds vain, I ve always taken great pride in my appearance - between the weight & melasma, I m a MESS. Please help - will meds for thyroid help with my weight & melasma? Does Hoshimotos trigger melasma? I m planning to start yoga this week, & I ve really enjoyed it in the past, but I need a great deal more help & QUICK! Please please please advise - I m MISERABLE!!!

Hello,

If your TSH is normal then other possible causes of weight gain and melasma to be worked on. few causes are eating junk food, or eating high energy diets as compared to amount of work you do and consume these fats slowly leading to pile up of this weight, you need to start yoga, control your intake of food especially fatty diets. Increase your physical work out, this will lead to weight loss. Melsama may be secondary to stress simply or some hormonal imbalance, same is weight gain secondary to hormonal imbalance, you need to look into cortisol levels, and dexa methasone suppression test to find cause of both weight gain and melasma.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

There are studies linking melasma to autoimmune thyroid illness. But whether treating hypothyroidism will improve your melasma is not a well studied or explained fact. Hypothyroidism is unlikely to be the cause of obesity as the weight gain seen in hypothyroidism is nothing more than 3 kg, which is likely to be lost once treatment is over. Weight gain may be due to increased diet, less physical activity which can be due to the depression which you are currently talking about.
