Does Gerd Cause Burning Sensation All The Way Till Sternum?

I think I have gerd, what are the normal symptoms. I had strept throat and then suddenly got this horrible burning in my throat, esophagus, chest and sternum. When I drink anything it is so painful I can t stand it. Would this cause burning all the way to your sternum?

Hi,

Retrosternal burning is a classical symptom of GERD. GERD means Gastrointestinal Reflux Disease.
Other symptoms of GERD are change in voice, burning sensation in upper stomach, changed voice as in LRPD, Referred pain to mid-back in esophagitis and so on.
Many a times this can be related to the anxiety and psychological upheavals.
Anything that causes increased acidity in stomach and causes the stomach contents to come up in esophagus can cause GERD. Tobacco and alcohol in any form increase the problems as also some foods like spicy and oily.
The Management is as follows:
Avoid oily and spicy foods.
Avoid stress and anxiety.
Take a PPI like Omeprazole.
Domperidone as a motility regulator.
Antacids particularly when on empty stomach.
Avoid medications known to increase acidity.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
