Does Birth Control Pill Cause Light Menstrual Bleeding?

I just want a second opinion on whether or not I should take a break from my birth control pill which I have been on for 5 yrs. now. I am 24 yrs. old and when I started the pill my period lasted about 7 days and was quite heavy. Now it lasts about 2 days and its very light. Can I have long term side effects because my period is disappearing? Also is it true that the pill can lower your sex drive?

hello,
Thanks for sharing your health concern with us. I have gone through your query and here are the answers. 1.Long term side effects are possible with any form of hormone contraception when used for a prolonged period. If pills suppressing ovulation are used, return of ovulation may be difficult. The suppression of ovulation is the likely cause for the decreased menstrual flow as the endometrial thickening is reduced. Other effects involve the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and hepatic function. 2. Lowered sex drive is not a well-documented side effect, but, the hormone disturbance can cause it in those vulnerable. You can take a break from the pill and make sure you get a suitable effective alternative. Hope this helps.
