Does Anxiety Lead To Severe Chest Pain Radiating Towards Shoulders?

Hi. I am 26 years old and have anxiety. For the past 6 months or so I have had pain in the chest down the breastbone on the side walls and sometime in the middle. My doctor first said it was costochondritis then said it was anxiety related. I feel this pain daily. It worsens when I get upset, stress, aggravated and sometimes when I walk it gets very sharp and moves up into my shoulder right beside my collar bone on the left and in one spot through to my back on the right. Its a very sharp, stabbing pain from the chest to my back and I pinching pain in my shoulder. Is this what angina feels like? My doctor said it probably was not my heart but I fear it is. I smokes for 10 years and I am in the process of quitting though I do smoke a couple a week some weeks. Can you give me some insight?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Chest pain can have a lot of causes, anxiety is one of them. It is a well established cause of chest pain. However, the chest pain you are experiencing should always be investigated and a heart related cause ruled out. I would recommend you to get yourself tested, a base line ecg and if that's ok then an exercise tolerance test is usually sufficient in such cases.
Regards.
